Get Creative for Climate Justice seeks to empower young people to get involved in the campaign for climate justice.
The project, which was jointly run by the RSL, CAFOD, Christian Aid and Oxfam, with the support of the Climate Coalition, engaged young people from across the UK in creating visual and written artworks that engaged with issues of climate justice, and which sought to communicate directly with decision-makers at local and national levels in order to make change.
The RSL was involved with the project because, as a charity that supports writers and champions writing of all kinds, we wanted young people to consider the power of words. We believe that writing – and writers – can change minds, and can even change the world.
We hope that through getting involved in Get Creative for Climate Justice, young writers felt inspired and empowered to speak boldly through their work. The work created was presented in schools and also shown to local elected representatives, and some were even taken forward to a special exhibition at Westminster – the seat of power in the UK – at the start of 2025.
Get Creative for Climate Justice Writing Resources:
We asked three brilliant writers who are part of the RSL Fellowship – which means they’ve been nominated by their peers for this special recognition of their talent – to help direct young people in this project. Each of them is a passionate campaigner for climate justice. And each of them have taken one of three writing styles – poetry, fiction or letter-writing – and set a provocation to help with writing.
We also created a learning resource, our RSL Creative Writing Facilitation Guide, to support young people’s reflective and creative journey as they explore questions of climate justice.
