Jonathan Sumption (Lord Sumption) began his career as a history Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford) before leaving to practice commercial and constitutional law at the bar. In 2012, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2108. He is the author of a number of books on medieval history, including a five-volume history of The Hundred Years War (Faber & Faber, 1989-2023), volume three of which was awarded the Wolfson Prize for 2009. He delivered the BBC Reith lectures in 2019 on the theme of Law and the Decline of Politics and has lectured widely on the constitution, democracy and free speech. Two collections of his lectures have been published by Profile Books.
