Elected: 2023
Susan Roberts is the Head of BBC Culture, Arts and Music Audio North. She has directed over 200 radio plays for Radios 3 and 4 and made many arts documentaries.
As well as working in Audio, Susan has directed several films including Men Who Sleep in Cars and Black Roses (RTS Award Best Drama) which she also directed for the Royal Exchange studio (Best Studio Production Manchester Theatre Awards). Other theatre projects include Family Matters (Z-arts) and The Island, the Sea, the Volunteer and the Refugee (Home). Her radio awards include Sony Gold, Amnesty International and ADA’s. She has anthologised several collections of poetry and started the BBC’s poetry festival, Contains Strong Language, in 2017.
She received the RSL’s Benson Medal in 2023.
Fellows are nominated by peers and elected by our Council of writers – our governing Board. Being elected a Fellow of the RSL is a lifetime honour. This role gives them the opportunity to support other writers, readers and the future of literature. The RSL connects writers in the Fellowship to one another, and to a wider readership.
