Speaking of love

On Valentine’s night, three of our most distinguished Fellows read and reflect upon their favourite poetry about love, both from their own work and the work of other poets. Wendy Cope’s collections include Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis, Serious Concerns and If I Don’t Know, and in 1988 she was the listeners’ choice in a BBC poll to succeed Ted Hughes as Poet Laureate. Jackie Kay, whose collections include The Adoption Papers, Other Lovers and The Lamplighter, in 2010 published an acclaimed memoir, Red Dust Road. Hugo Williams, whose Billy’s Rain, the chronicle of a long love affair, won the T.S. Eliot Prize, contributes a regular column, ‘Freelance’, to the TLS.
