What is the future of European authorship in a post-Brexit context? In an event celebrating European Literature Night, A.L. Kennedy gives a keynote address, and will then join in discussion with Clemens Meyer from Germany and Francesca Melandri from Italy.

Born in Dundee, A.L. Kennedy is a novelist, short story writer and non-fiction writer. She has twice been included on the Granta Best of Young British Novelists list. Clemens Meyer has written four novels, the first of which, As We Were Dreaming, was adapted for film and featured at the Berlinale film festival. His most recent book, Bricks and Mortar (2016) is the story of the sex trade in a big city in the former GDR, from just before 1989 to the present day. Francesca Melandri is a film and documentary maker as well as the author of two prizewinning novels. Her first novel, Eva dorme, published in English as Eva Sleeps in 2016, is a sweeping story about family, forgiveness, conflict and the search for truth set in the border regions of Northern Italy and Austria. The evening is chaired by Arifa Akbar, freelance journalist and former Literary Editor of The Independent.

This event is part of the European Writers' Tour 2017, a EUNIC London project coordinated by the Institut Camões in partnership with the Royal Society of Literature and the British Library. It is supported by The European Commission Representation in the UK and EUNIC Global, with additional support by the Czech Centre, the Goethe-Institut, Flanders House, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Institut Francais.

European Writers’ Tour takes place throughout 2017 in London and around the country. Launching at European Literature Night: A L Kennedy and Guests, the tour invites European authors to talk and meet audiences at five major British literature festivals, as well as a range of talks and events at the British Library.
