Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s letter to her friend Madge Vaughan in 1904 in which she writes, ‘I wish you could see my room at this moment’, this event offers a reflective space on women’s intellectual and creative work now. 

Visitors are invited to spend some time in Room 411, one of the two rooms at the top of 46 Gordon Square occupied by Virginia Woolf between 1904 and 1907. Everyone is encouraged to visit the space, with women and other marginalised identities in academic and professional writing particularly encouraged to reflect on the conditions that they need to write in 2024. 

This interactive space is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s seminal essay A Room of One’s Own and in response to the gender pay gap in academia, writing, publishing, academic ‘housework’, and the negative effect of the global pandemic on women’s research. 

Register for a ticket and you can drop in at any point during the opening hours. 

Please note: The entrance to the building and the first 3 floors are wheelchair accessible, but 411 is only accessible via stairs. 

Conceived by RSL Fellows, Elaine Showalter and Hermione Lee, Dalloway Day is the RSL’s annual celebration of Mrs Dalloway and other writings by and inspired by Virginia Woolf. This year, marking 99 years since the initial publication of the iconic book that takes place over a Wednesday in mid-June. This year our events are taking place over a few days at Birkbeck College, using spaces in the college which are part of the former home of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.
